Blood Bowl Woodland Fox (Carl)

Another completion posted on the same day!!

You can tell I had a few needing just their bases finishing.

This is a Woodland Fox for my Blood Bowl Gnome team. I really enjoyed painting him, it was pretty quick to do and I’m happy with the final result.

Completion number 18 for the year.

Blood Bowl Goblin (Carl)

This little fella has been waiting ages for me to finish him. Literally a 5 minute job and scenic scatter on the base. But somehow I kept leaving it.

Anyway, he’s one of the modern Goblin sculpts for Blood Bowl by Games Workshop. I needed a couple of Goblin replacements for my Orc team Da Deff Skwadd. The existing minis I had in the team have been transferred to my Goblin team along with the Troll. So there’s another Goblin and Troll currently in progress for Da Deff Skwadd too.

This one is completion number 17 for the year!

More Blood Bowl Gnomes! (Carl)

After a few weeks gap I’ve managed to get a couple more of the Gnomes finished towards my Blood Bowl Gnome team.

I’m still a bit undecided about my theme/concept for these. I think it’s the contrast paints I used to base them.

Ork Flesh and Snakebite Leather have proved to be a bit darker than I intended the end result to be.

I’m hoping my basing will brighten the overall look of the full team when it’s finished.

These take my completions to 16 this year.

Blood Bowl Gnome (Carl)

Another Blood Bowl finish! This time it’s a Gnome.

I considered using a traditional gnome colour scheme (garden variety) or even a Smurf colour scheme but in the end I rejected both of those in favour of an experiment.

I’ve leaned into the woodland spirit aspect of the Gnomes with my paint scheme, going for a Green Man vibe. In the Blood Bowl setting the Gnomes are tricksters often playing practical jokes on those that travel through their realms. So I adopted a gnome-in-the-woodland-camouflage colourway.

It’s totally darker than I intended but I’m committed now. I’ve applied the same brown and green contrast paints on all the minis at the same time, before going in to start to finish each one.

I still like him. Plus… he’s completion number 14!

Human Bright Crusaders Blood Bowl Team (Carl)

It’s been the best part of 7 months since my last entry here! My word that’s a long time without completions. Thinking about it I have finished another lizardman warrior over the course of the year but forgot to take a photo. Anyway…

Here is the completed (for now) Bright Crusaders human Blood Bowl team. I’ll add another Thrower at some point but these are the main bunch of players.

I’ve used the team uniform colours from (I think) the second edition of the game rather than the current blue and white the GW in-house team is painted in.

Overall I’m happy with these. The freehand is a bit wobbly but then I’m painting in fits and starts so not really getting sustained practice in.

Total completions for the year so far… 13!

I’ve got some work to do if I want to hit 52+ by year end.

Blood Bowl Human Thrower (Carl)

It’s the second completion of the year! Sticking with my current painting project it’s another player for the Bright Crusaders, this time in the form of a Thrower.

The oversized ball always makes me smile when I look at Blood Bowl models but I can understand why the design choice was made. Similar to all things in fantasy and sci fi miniatures, exaggeration is needed to create a strong silhouette from two foot away on the tabletop.

So two completions so far this year.

Blood Bowl Human Lineman (Carl)

My first completion of the year!! It’s in January too!! Woohoo!

I mentioned in my previous post that I started a human Blood Bowl team in December. This was a completely unintended distraction as I rediscovered them primed and ready to paint in a box.

I’ve decided to paint them in the original Bright Crusaders uniform. I’m quite pleased with how he’s turned out, even though my freehand numbers and shoulder symbol are very ropey.

It’s an old single piece plastic model from the third edition of the game in the mid 90s. Single piece models really are lovely to work with.

Blood Bowl Gretchen Wächter (Carl)

The second Blood Bowl model completed in December this time for my other brother’s Christmas present is Gretchen Wächter (I might have mangled the spelling on that).

Another of GWs expert resin kits and another fiddly thing to construct. A separate piece for the face!? Sheesh.

I lost my way a bit on the painting as I was struggling for time but I think it turned out okay in the end.

These recent two models bring my total for the year to 45. I’m not convinced I can hit 52 as I’d need to complete another 7 today.

Blood Bowl Jeremiah Kool (Carl)

December has been a tricky month to get anything finished in, but I did manage a couple of models for my brothers Christmas presents.

First up is the Blood Bowl Dark Elf Jeremiah Kool. This was one of what GW call an ‘expert kit’, essentially this means a multi-part resin model.

It was nine parts and ooof! Yup, it was a fiddly thing to put together. The painting was reasonably easy though, I followed the colour scheme on the packaging as my brother’s team also has a purple kit.

Blood Bowl Goblin Fan (Carl)

Another model off the Work in Progress pile/queue. In this instance a Blood Bowl Goblin fan from waaaaay back in the olden days.

I spent far too long considering repainting him to blend his skin tones but eventually decided to just call it done and move on.

His scarf has the motivational message to “Go for it!” Which was old Blood Bowl speak for inviting the dice gods to laugh at you. Nowadays the process of ‘going for’ an extra square is called a Dash, maybe this is a cunning ploy by the writers to avoid the gaze of the dice gods. But Nuffle sees all.

His base has a bit of sprue to represent beer cans and a random bit of card painted as stadium detritus thrown by the hooligans at the back.

I’ve got two more fans to join him as reroll counters to finish, hopefully getting this guy finished will spur me on to complete his comrades.

Blood Bowl Goblins (Carl)

I've finally finished the final few players for my Goblin Blood Bowl team. I've still got a few extras to do like reroll models, biased Ref, mascot etc. But as far as the actual players in the pitch. They're finally finished and ready for action!

Have to admit I'm pretty pleased with how it's all come together. Looking forward to getting up to some Goblin shenanigans on the field when the league starts.

And finally, the whole team shot:

Blood Bowl Goblins and Ball (Carl)

Another two Goblins for my Goblin Blood Bowl team, plus an old 3rd edition Ball.

The Hooligan is an old Blood Bowl Fan/Hooligan from (I think) 2nd edition Blood Bowl but I can't remember for sure (had them soooo long). I've got three others WiP on my painting desk that I'll be using for Re-Roll markers.

I've now just got four more regular Goblins and a Chainsaw Loonie to finish and that'll be the team complete.

I've painted the Hooligan with a slightly different base to the main team as I wanted to make the visual connection with the concept of a fan running onto the field to give someone a kicking.

Blood Bowl Goblin Bomma (Carl)

The slow progression of my Goblin Blood Bowl team continues with the addition of the Goblin Bomma.

3rd edition model from the 90s. Really enjoying putting this team together even with it taking an age to complete.

Blood Bowl Goblin Pogoer (Carl)

A month after the last completed miniature.. Good grief. What a slow pace. But it's here!

Another addition to my Blood Bowl Goblin team, in this case a Pogoer. I foresee his job will be primary ball carrier from kickoffs.

A repaint/paint over of Scrappa Sorehead from my old Deff Skwadd Orc team into his new team colours as Orcs no longer get the weapons and madcap gobbo stuff on their team.

Blood Bowl Troll and Goblin (Carl)

I've managed to get another couple of models finished towards my Goblin Blood Bowl team.

A second Troll and a Goblin.

The Troll was a rebase and repaint from my old Deff Skwadd Orc team. I messed up on the number, brush control went awry so I'll probably come back and repaint that shoulder pad after the rest of the team is finished. This Troll is the 'off the shelf' pose (the previous Troll I've painted recently has a repositioning of the left arm).

The Goblin was primed white with goblin green on the skin areas but very chipped from languishing in the box of Blood Bowl. Have to admit to really loving the old goblins, it's a static pose but loads of character nonetheless.

The photos have a bit of a dark shadow coming off the Troll due to the incredibly bright sunlight beaming in through the window.

Next up for the team are a Goblin pogoer and Goblin bomber.

Blood Bowl - Troll (Carl)

Finished another old Blood Bowl model this week. A second edition Troll, with a slight repositioning of the left arm. The model has lain primed but chipped and battered in the WiP box for literally years.

So a quick rebase to a 32mm round, along with repriming with GW's Corax White and I've finally given the model a paint job.

The basing is done with GW's Technical Paint Stirland Battlemire which I can only surmise is made up of sand, PVA and paint. It's a quick way to texture a base but I think I prefer my usual approach of wall filler applied with a sculpting tool. I'll use up the technical paint on my Blood Bowl bases but don't think I'll be in a hurry to buy any more. It's good if you're in a hurry (I can imagine this approach being fantastic for last minute tournament preparation) but I'm generally fairly laid back with regards getting stuff painted so see no need for that particular time saver.

The glossy areas on the base are Green Stuff World's UV Resin (I got mine in the UK from Eureka Miniatures UK). It produces a very good water effect.

I've noticed with my last few posts that my phone camera really does kill the graduations between colours on models. Might have to try the 'proper' camera next time.

Blood Bowl - Goblin Fanatic (Carl)

I fell off the 'paint on brush' horse a few weeks back, the week or two prior to that saw only the bare minimum activity too. Since then I've had a couple of failed attempts to get back on horse and start building the painting momentum again but to no avail. But that changed this weekend.

I signed up to join a tabletop Blood Bowl league which, if vaccines and covid cases allow, should start in July. My go to team for Blood Bowl has always been Orcs, but the one wrinkle that gave me pause this time around is that the new edition doesn't have secret weapons in the Orc list. I really fancied taking the crazy fanatic, bomber and chainsaw etc onto the field again. The only way to do that in Blood Bowl 2020 is by running a Goblin team. So that's what I'll be doing.

A quick rebase and reprime of an old Fungus Da Loon miniature and I found myself back on the painting horse.

In fact I finished this one and primed an old troll over the weekend. Hopefully this might be the thing that gets my momentum going again.
